New England Governors and Eastern Canadian Premiers Confer on Regional Issues

Halifax, Nova Scotia – Vermont's Governor says three primary issues have been discussed at the conference: the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative or RGGI, energy transmission and border concerns. He had gone to the meeting to push for support of RGGI......

Governor Schumlin said energy transmission is a critical issue as Canada's hydro industry grows and demand for that energy in New England becomes greater.....

Middlebury College Professor Emeritus of Political Science Eric Davis says the most important common issue between New England and eastern Canada is energy because the provinces are a net producer, while New England is a net consumer of electric power.......

On Tuesday, CVPS, the state's largest electric utility, announced it had signed an agreement to be sold to the Montreal-based Gaz Metro, which trumped an offer by another Canadian utility. Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin issued a statement saying he's gratified that the deal that will consolidate Vermont's two largest utilities, promising significant savings for ratepayers, reiterating comments he made on Monday.......

Next year the meeting of New England Governors and eastern Canadian Premiers will be held in Vermont.
