Legs McNeil, Gillian McCain Give Mary Rose Life After Death

Literature has a long history of posthumous diaries, some of which changed the world and others of which languished in anonymity. Thanks to co-authors Gillian McCain and Legs McNeil, the late Mary Rose is getting her due.

The co-authors have come together to edit Dear Nobody: The True Diary of Mary Rose, a first-person story of alienation, illness, substance abuse, and youth.

The book is published by Sourcebook Fire and marks the latest collaboration between the pair behind the seminal Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk — indeed, McNeil is widely credited with coining that term. He also co-wrote I Slept With Joey Ramone about Mickey Leigh’s experience growing up in a punk family, which Leigh discussed on our show in 2010. McCain’s other work includes her books of poetry.

A lifelong resident of the Capital Region, Ian joined WAMC in late 2008 and became news director in 2013. He began working on Morning Edition and has produced The Capitol Connection, Congressional Corner, and several other WAMC programs. Ian can also be heard as the host of the WAMC News Podcast and on The Roundtable and various newscasts. Ian holds a BA in English and journalism and an MA in English, both from the University at Albany, where he has taught journalism since 2013.
