Montpelier, VT – Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin supports and will sign onto an effort to allow doctors to write, and pharmacists to fill, medical marijuana prescriptions. WAMC's North Country Bureau Chief Pat Bradley has more...

Shumlin plans to sign on to a letter sent by Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee and Washington Governor Christine Gregoire to the federal drug enforcement administration petitioning for a change in marijuana's status. They want it reclassified under federal law to allow doctors to prescribe it and pharmacists to dispense it.

Marijuana Policy Project Communications Manager Morgan Fox says the petition will not have any impact on federal law...

"Regardless of its classification, marijuana is still illegal and the penalties will remain the same," said Fox.

Vermont's current medical marijuana law requires those eligible to register with the department of public safety.
