North Adams, Massachusetts, has a new police chief.

Mayor Tom Bernard announced Wednesday that the North Adams Police Department’s own Lieutenant Jason R. Wood – an 18-year veteran of the force – will become the northern Berkshire County city’s new chief. In a statement, Bernard said he was looking for a candidate “with significant law enforcement experience who understands the critical value of a collaborative approach and a willingness to build and strengthen relationships with key community partners.” Identifying issues like domestic violence and the opioid epidemic, the mayor said Wood was “ready to lead and to innovate.”  Chief Michael Cozzalgio retired earlier this year after more than three decades in the department. Wood was one of three finalists.

Josh Landes has been WAMC's Berkshire Bureau Chief since February 2018, following stints at WBGO Newark and WFMU East Orange. A passionate advocate for Western Massachusetts, Landes was raised in Pittsfield and attended Hampshire College in Amherst, receiving his bachelor's in Ethnomusicology and Radio Production. His free time is spent with his cat Harry, experimental electronic music, and exploring the woods.
