The president of the Massachusetts Teachers Association is sharply criticizing the state’s planning for reopening schools during the COVID-19 pandemic. As public school districts around the commonwealth plan for the fall semester, Merrie Najimy says state guidance has been lacking – and that Governor Charlie Baker’s plan to carry out testing only in districts with signs of the pandemic “recklessly creates false confidence.” While the state has pushed back the start of the fall semester to as late as September 16, Najimy tells WAMC that there are still crucial public health benchmarks Massachusetts has failed to address.

Josh Landes has been WAMC's Berkshire Bureau Chief since February 2018, following stints at WBGO Newark and WFMU East Orange. A passionate advocate for Western Massachusetts, Landes was raised in Pittsfield and attended Hampshire College in Amherst, receiving his bachelor's in Ethnomusicology and Radio Production. His free time is spent with his cat Harry, experimental electronic music, and exploring the woods.
