Holyoke Mayor Alex Morse Monday night hosted a launch party for his congressional campaign with a reported 200 supporters.

Earlier in the day, Morse announced he plans to challenge 30-year incumbent U.S. Representative Richard Neal in a Democratic primary in the Massachusetts 1st Congressional District.

Morse became Holyoke’s youngest and first openly gay mayor in 2011 at the age of 22.

WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill spoke with Morse.

Neal’s campaign issued a statement that said the congressman, who now chairs the Ways and Means Committee, has “fought tirelessly to ensure that the people of our region are not forgotten and receive our fair share.”

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
