With the college facing an uncertain future, the chair of Hampshire College’s board of trustees has resigned.

After six years, Gaye Hill has vacated the position, saying she has “become a lightning rod for criticism.”

Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts announced the departure Monday.

The board has faced what Hill described as “vitriol, slanderous attacks, and the questioning of motives” after it announced plans not to enroll a full Fall 2019 class and carry out staff and faculty layoffs early in the year. The move prompted ongoing protest from students, faculty, staff, and alumni. The private school board’s longest-serving current vice chair – Luis Hernandez – took over as chair Sunday.
