Amtrak has put out a timetable to return service to pre-pandemic schedules in western Massachusetts.

Full service on the Valley Flyer will re-start on July 26th.  The trains run on the so-called Knowledge Corridor Line along the Connecticut River with stops in Greenfield, Northampton, Holyoke, and Springfield.

Previously, Amtrak said its long distance train, The Vermonter, with those same station stops in Massachusetts, would return to service on July 19th.

Rail advocates cheered the news.  WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill spoke with Ben Heckscher, co-founder of Trains in The Valley.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
