Longest Serving Current Springfield Councilor Won't Run Again

The dean of the city council in Springfield, Massachusetts says he is calling it a career.

Tim Rooke has announced he will not run for a 12th two-year term as an at-large city councilor.

His decision came as a surprise, since he had taken out nomination papers, collected signatures, and given other indications he planned to run again.

WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill spoke with Rooke.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
