Kerry's Confirmation Kicks Off Massachusetts Senate Race

WAMC

The confirmation of John Kerry as Secretary of State starts  the third senate contest in Massachusetts since 2010.

The special election to fill Kerry’s unexpired senate term is expected to be held on  June 25th.  Gladys Oyola, the city of Springfield’s election commissioner said it’s a good date, as it is just after schools close but before the busy vacation season.

Democratic Congressman Ed Markey is the only announced candidate for the special election ,so far.  Governor Patrick will name an interim appointee to fill Kerry’s seat until the special election.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
