The former St. Rose campus will be hosting a weekly farmers market starting this Thursday.
The market will be open Thursdays from 5 to 8 p.m. through the end of October. It's expected to feature 30 vendors and an entrepreneurship program for kids under 17 who want to sell handmade products.
Albany County Executive Dan McCoy says the market is one of several programs that will make the campus into a "community hub," complete with a public pool and senior center.
"It is going to be a great opportunity for people to get fresh vegetables and enjoy this campus," he said. "It was always a fabric of our community, but not opened all the time, and you weren't always allowed to walk through the buildings or come here and enjoy this beautiful sanctuary, as I like to call it. It's about creating a place where people can come together, support local businesses, enjoy a meal, and spend time with family and friends."
The market is currently accepting Farmers Market Nutrition Program checks. Market Organizer Steve Abraham says they will accept SNAP benefits when the market reopens in June, if not sooner.
