A former factory in the Adirondacks is being transformed into affordable housing.
The $46 million 80-unit mixed-use development will be built at the 11-acre, 124,600-square-foot former Oval Wood Dish Factory in Tupper Lake. The long-vacant industrial site will include more than 25,000 square feet of commercial space, a courtyard, playground, walking paths and fully accessible and adaptable apartments. It will be an all-electric building utilizing cold climate heat pump technology and a whole-building ventilation system.
The Oval Wood Dish Factory, built in 1916, produced wooden products including oval wooden dishes, bowling pins and hardwood flooring. It closed in 1964. From 2003 to 2008, Jarden Plastic Solutions used the factory to make a variety of plastic items.
