Marion Porterfield is a few weeks into her tenure as Schenectady's new City Council President. Porterfield, a Democrat, is the first Black woman to serve as council president and 10 years ago became the first Black woman to serve on the city council.

WAMC's Southern Adirondack Bureau Chief Lucas Willard asked Porterfield about her first month in her new role.

Lucas Willard is a news reporter and host at WAMC Northeast Public Radio, which he joined in 2011. He produces and hosts The Best of Our Knowledge and WAMC Listening Party.
