A former town clerk in the Fulton County town of Mayfield was sentenced Wednesday for stealing more than $35,000 from the county.

Former Mayfield Town Clerk Dorothy Hart received 250 hours of community service for taking more than $27,000 in property taxes and $8,000 in dog licensing and other fees, according to New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli.

The Comptroller said Hart covered her crimes by submitting false monthly reports to the town supervisor.

Hart has paid back the sum after pleading guilty to fourth-degree larceny in September.

As part of the sentence, she is barred from serving in public office.

The Comptroller’s office’s investigation was assisted by the Fulton County District Attorney and New York State Police.
