Indicted NY Congressman: Criminal Probe A Shock

Facebook: Rep. Chris Collins

Republican New York Congressman Chris Collins says it was "the shock of all shocks" when he learned from two federal agents that he was under criminal investigation.

In an interview airing Monday, the three-term lawmaker told Buffalo station WIVB that he thought agents came to him in April to talk about an ongoing congressional ethics probe. Then they told him they had a subpoena.

Collins was indicted a month ago on charges he used inside information about a biotechnology company to make illicit stock trades. He dropped his bid for re-election but says he's innocent and will fight the charges.

President Donald Trump last week criticized Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Twitter over the indictment and that of another Republican congressman, suggesting prosecutors had put Republicans in midterm jeopardy.
