A 24-year-old man has been charged with leaving the scene of a boat crash that killed an 8-year-old girl from Carlsbad, California who was vacationing at Lake George in the southern Adirondacks.

Warren County Sheriff Bud York says Alexander West of Lake George was charged with the felony Friday. York says four people who were on West's boat Monday night were charged with hindering the investigation and making false statements.

Charlotte McCue, initially said to be 9, died and her mother was injured when her family's boat was struck. West's boat was later found abandoned at a motel dock.

Investigators believe West and friends had spent all day drinking at the annual Log Bay Day party.

West's lawyer, Steve Coffey, said West wasn't drunk and didn't know anyone was hurt.
