Services will be held Tuesday for Fort Plain mayor Guy Barton, who died Friday after an illness.

A lifelong resident of Fort Plain, Barton died Friday in Cooperstown at age 69.

Barton, who served as mayor for 11 years, and was a longtime member of the Fort Plain Volunteer Fire Department, is remembered as an advocate for the community he loved.

In December, Barton spoke on the resiliency of the community after rebuilding from a devastating flood.

“I’m so proud of the community, I gloat. Okay? I gloat. I don’t have no short skirt on, but I can be a cheerleader. I’m true. If you believe in a community, you can make it work.”

A memorial service will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Harry Hoag Gymnasium. A burial service will follow at Fort Plain Cemetery.
