Citizen Group Looks To Merge City And County Operations

A citizen group consisting of some of the Syracuse area's most influential people is making a push to merge the city's operations with those of Onondaga County.

The Post-Standard of Syracuse reports an organization called Consensus will release an 80-page report on Tuesday that includes its preliminary options for streamlining the governments of upstate New York's third-largest city and the surrounding county.

The document includes more than 50 recommendations for modernizing government in Onondaga County, a move the group says could save $20 million a year in governmental administrative costs alone.

The recommendations include merging city and county governments and consolidating the Syracuse Police Department and the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office.

The group's members include current and former lawmakers, college administrators, business executives and civic leaders.
