Waterford Seal Swims To Cape Cod

A gray seal removed from a canal lock in upstate New York has made its way to Cape Cod Bay after being released off Long Island.

The Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation has been tracking the seal with a satellite tag since the organization captured it in Waterford and released it to the sea on Dec. 10.

The seal had swum 150 miles up the Hudson River past Albany in July and was often spotted in the Waterford area by kayakers over the summer. It was captured on Dec. 4 to ensure its welfare and return it to its natural ocean habitat.

The Riverhead Foundation says the seal appears healthy and active in an area with many other seals. The foundation will continue to track him as it does other marine mammals and sea turtles it rescues.
