A New York State Assemblywoman has announced legislation to support local Christmas tree farms.

Assemblywoman Carrie Woerner of Washington and Saratoga counties unveiled a bill this week to establish a “Go Green Weekend” to support tree farms.

Woener said the tax-free weekend that would be held over a three-day period beginning the first Friday in December would encourage families to shop locally and support New York farmers.

Woerner’s office says sales of Christmas trees grown in the state declined by 66 percent between 2002 and 2012.

Republican state Senator Kathy Marchione said she would also support the legislation. The new legislative session begins in January.
