Grand Jury Declines To Indict Guards In Prisoner's Death

The Sullivan County district attorney says a grand jury has declined to indict guards at a maximum-security prison in upstate New York where an inmate died in an April confrontation.

District Attorney James Farrell says the grand jury examined the death of 52-year-old Karl Taylor at Sullivan Correctional Facility in Fallsburg, 81 miles northwest of New York City.

The New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association says three officers were hurt, one with a severe head injury and one with a broken arm.

Officials say Taylor was serving a term of 27 ½-to-55 years for sex crimes and was eligible for parole in 2020.

Union attorney Kirk Orseck says Taylor died from cardiac arrest and wasn't taking prescribed medications for mental illness and high blood pressure.
