New York is joining more than 20 other states in prohibiting the sale of powdered alcohol.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has signed the new law, which takes effect in 30 days to prohibit sales of the freeze-dried alcohol, which is mixed with water to create beverages.

Cuomo says it's a dangerous product that can lead to unsafe levels of intoxication by improperly mixing it or ingesting the powder.

Producers of the product say it should be subject to the same regulation as alcoholic beverages.

Federal regulators authorized its sale in March.
