Parents Charged In Baby's Overdose Death

A woman and a man have been charged in connection with the death of the woman's 13-month old daughter from a drug overdose at an upstate New York home earlier this year.

The Post-Star of Glens Falls reports 27-year-old Rachel Ball and 34-year-old Joshua Bennett were both charged Thursday with second-degree murder, manslaughter and assault.

Authorities say Kayleigh Cassell died Feb. 22 in a home in the Warren County town of Kingsbury where Bennett was staying. Officials say toxicology tests showed she had ingested cocaine and heroin.

Ball and Bennett aren't accused of intentionally killing the toddler. The murder charge alleges they showed "depraved indifference to human life" while the manslaughter count accuses them of recklessness.

Bennett pleaded not guilty at his morning arraignment. Ball is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday afternoon.
