Senator Chuck Schumer is promoting legislation to provide federal money to trauma centers, which treat patients severely injured in car crashes, fires, natural disasters and other catastrophic events.
Schumer noted Wednesday that trauma is the leading cause of death for Americans under 44. He's pushing for Senate passage of the Trauma Systems and Regionalization of Emergency Care Reauthorization Act, which was approved by the House of Representatives in March.
“We have to keep these trauma centers up and running and operating with adequate resources even though they’re expensive to maintain.”
The legislation authorizes grants for planning, implementing, and developing trauma care systems, as well as support for existing trauma centers.
Schumer says a sizeable portion of upstate New York and the U.S. at large lack access to these resources.
