Authorities Say Safety Equipment Caused Selkirk Derailment

Authorities are investigating the cause of a derailment in Albany County that occurred Wednesday evening.

According to a release, the New York State Department of Transportation and the Federal Railroad Administration are investigating the 18 freight car derailment at the CSX rail yard in Selkirk, NY.

Investigators initially determined a safety device designed to prevent trains from moving into work areas was mistakenly left on the track where repair work had previously been completed.

Authorities said four hazardous materials cars were involved, but no leaks were found. No injuries were reported in the accident. The release said CSX notified the Department of Transportation within one hour of the accident occurring, in accordance with state law.
