Ice, Rain Cause Power Outages In North & West NY

Utilities are working to restore electricity to tens of thousands of customers in northern and western New York after freezing rain coated trees with an inch of ice, snapping limbs that brought down power lines.

A spokeswoman for the Jefferson County Emergency Operations Center in Watertown said Sunday afternoon that other than some property damage and a few minor injuries, the ice storm that began Saturday hadn't caused major problems.

States of emergency were declared in Jefferson and St. Lawrence counties and sheriff's offices advised against unnecessary travel to allow utility and highway crews to make repairs and clean up.

At 9 p.m. Sunday, National Grid reported more than 36,000 customers without power and New York State Electric and Gas reported 3,802 customers affected.
