Audit Targets Safety On NY State Railroad Bridges

en.wikipedia.org

A New York state audit has found the Department of Transportation lacked records showing adequate safety plans and inspections for many railroad bridges statewide.

State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli tells The Associated Press some safety records required by state law were late and others apparently didn't exist.

State Department of Transportation officials say all railroad bridges are safe under new, stringent regulations. A transportation official says railroads are "ultimately responsible" to inspect their own 3,000 bridges statewide and the Federal Railroad Administration enforces the regulations.

The state official also says all 48 of the state-owned railroad bridges will be inspected by the end of the year as required annually.

The DOT Executive Deputy Commissioner says the state's "commitment to bridge safety is unparalleled."

The audit is being released today.
