NYC Voters Have Big Say On State Casino Measure

New York City voters could have the biggest say in deciding whether the state authorizes seven Las Vegas-style casinos.

Steven Greenberg of the Siena College poll says 42 percent of statewide voter turnout today will be from New York City, where the mayor's office is up for grabs.

New York City's influence is notable because it is among the places that may not be affected immediately if the measure is approved. One casino would be in the Southern Tier, two in the Catskills and another in the Saratoga Springs area. A New York City casino wouldn't be built for at least seven years under a deal that cemented legislative support for the proposal.

Polls have shown more support for expanding casino gambling since the proposition on today’s ballot was reworded over the summer to add disputed promises of more jobs, tax revenue and school aid.
