Lawmakers Want Education Forums Rescheduled

New York Education Commissioner John King Jr.'s office is looking at alternative ways to engage with parents about education reforms after canceling a series of forums following a raucous meeting in Poughkeepsie.

A department spokesman says Wednesday that the office is working with the PTA but has yet to schedule anything.

King, in a statement Monday, said he'd been looking forward to answering parents' questions around the state. But after being shouted down at the first forum in Poughkeepsie Oct. 10, he said it was clear that special interests were determined to manipulate the meetings.

The decision to cancel the remaining forums has drawn criticism from state lawmakers and others.

Among things that have some parents upset is the state's decision to base standardized tests on rigorous new learning standards.
