EPA Awards $30K To Mohawks For Asthma Program

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency awarded $30,000 dollars to the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe in New York to educate the community on reducing exposure to substances that can trigger asthma attacks.

The grant was awarded under the EPA's Environmental Justice Small Grants Program.

The Mohawks' Air Quality Program will use the grant to implement a clean air intervention project that will educate the northern New York tribal community to reduce exposure to indoor asthma triggers.

An indoor air quality expert will conduct an air quality audit of each home and help residents reduce exposures to toxins including radon, mold, household chemicals and second-hand smoke.

Participants will receive continued monitoring to evaluate the impact of these strategies.
