Politician indicted in NY 2008 perjury case

A former New York state assemblyman has pleaded not guilty to perjury in a corruption case.

An indictment was unsealed Wednesday in the Bronx against Nelson Castro.

Prosecutors say Castro lied under oath during a civil proceeding concerning his eligibility for placement on the ballot in a primary election for the 86th Assembly District.

The Bronx Democrat resigned last week after he said he cooperated with federal officials in a separate bribery case involving Bronx Democratic Assemblyman Eric Stevenson. Castro was not charged criminally in that case.

Castro's lawyer Michael Farkas says he expects the state charges against his client to be dismissed as long as he keeps cooperating with federal officials.
