Lake Placid, NY – Lake Placid officials formed a local coalition in late 2010 when the Empire State Games were cancelled. In early 2011, 900 youth athletes competed. This year organizers are prepared to host 1200 athletes. Empire State Winter Games Organizing Committee Director Jim McKenna says because they have increased sponsorships this year they are expanding the competition. The Olympic Regional Development Authority manages the Olympic venues in Lake Placid. Director of Events Jim Goff outlined some of the changes to this year's games. U.S. Olympic Training Center and North Elba Town Councilman Jack Favro says the educational component will be an important aspect of the games. While organizers have not reached enough sponsorships for their targeted budget, Committee Members Jim McKenna and Jim Goff say they are not overextending themselves. The Empire State Winter Games will run from February 2nd thru the 5th. The winter games organizers are working with a group called the Empire State Games Foundation, which has been formed in Rochester, to reestablish the summer games in 2013.
