Plattsburgh, NY – The Glens Falls Post-Star first reported that Protect the Adirondacks had challenged the federal petition from Saratoga and North Creek Railway's owner, Iowa Pacific Holdings, to re-open the rail line. Iowa Pacific wants to purchase the easement for the track and haul tailings from two mines. That material is now hauled by truck. More than 13 miles of the Tahawus line are surrounded by state forest preserve, which falls under the Forever Wild clause of the state constitution. Protect the Adirondacks Forest Stewardship Program Chair and Conservation Advocacy Co-Chair Sid Harring.
Sid Harring has two key concerns about the proposal Iowa Pacific is offering.
Adirondack Wild Partner Dave Gibson noted that the federal government took possession of the land during a public emergency in World War Two, usurping the state's Constitutional protection of the lands.
