Schoharie, NY – Almost three months after Tropical Storm Irene pummeled communities around eastern New York, people in the hard-hit village of Schoharie are still rebuilding. WAMC's Dave Lucas reports progress has been slow because the damage was so widespread...

Irene created a surge along Schoharie Creek that damaged 275 of the village's 350 buildings in this rural village 25 miles west of Albany.

Though thousands of volunteers and contractors have helped gut and rebuild houses, many residents have yet to get back into their homes. Storefronts in the quaint village flooded out by Irene remain mostly empty and temporary trailers are plunked down alongside grand old homes.

Still, residents say they are confident that enough people will stay to keep Schoharie vibrant.
