Albany, NY – The US Department of Agriculture has announced it is making a 1-point-8 million dollar commitment to a project to protect farmland in Dutchess and Columbia Counties. WAMC's Dave Lucas reports...

The money is earmarked to help close the gap on a $3.6 million dollar project put together by Scenic Hudson and the Dutchess Land Conservancy to protect ten working farms, eight in the town of Red Hook and two in the Columbia County town of Clermont. Scenic Hudson President Ned Sullivan...

"This is a major boost to the region's economy that will help farmers who have been providing food to the region and to the New York City markets for decades," says Sullivan.

Sullivan says farming is a crucial part of the Hudson Valley economy. Scenic Hudson will be contributing $1.2 million dollars to the overall project and the town of Red Hook $615,000 to the eight local projects.
