Adirondacks Reeling from Tropical Storm Irene

Keene, NY – The heart of New York's Adirondack Mountains has been badly hurt by Tropical Storm Irene as heavy rains pushed creeks and rivers over their banks, closed roads and washed away buildings. WAMC North Country Bureau Chief Pat Bradley has more...

Media reports say emergency services officials are inspecting hundreds of damaged or destroyed roads and bridges.

There are numerous evacuations and the fire station in Keene was swept away by the raging dart brook. Road closures effectively isolated Keene Valley.

Road crews temporarily closed the two main connecting bridges in Elizabethtown.

The Adirondack Northway was closed between exits 31 and 32 because of worries about a bridge.

There are many reports of barns and houses being lifted and swept downriver.

I'm Pat Bradley, WAMC News.
