Green Island, NY – The Green Island Power Authority is forging ahead with ambitious plans to build new tourist and recreational facilities. Capital District Bureau Chief Dave Lucas reports.

The Authority is looking to install new generators, which would upgrade its existing facility from 7 to 49 megawatts, and is in the process of obtaining federal approval. GIPA also wants to put up a second hydro plant along the Mohawk River. Green Island Mayor Ellen McNulty-Ryan is all-for the 100-million dollar expansion.

Among the possibilities are the construction of a municipal plaza, plaza overlook and other developments. Power Authority Chairman Jack Brown says the plans were released this week. Ford Motor Company built the plant in 1922 to feed electricity to its nearby radiator factory. It once employed thousands of workers and for decades was Green Island's economic backbone. Brown notes the expansion will be an environmentally-friendly one.

Green Island is holding a Community Day on September 19th where there will be an Open House scheduled at the Power Authority, and officials will meet the public to explain and discuss the expansion plans.
