After having to cancel last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, fireworks displays are being held this Fourth of July holiday in Massachusetts cities and towns.

However, some celebrations were called off, or postponed, because of uncertainty in the spring over whether restrictions on outdoor gatherings would still be in place on July 4th.

In Springfield, Independence Day festivities will be held on Sunday in Riverfront Park.

WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill spoke with Judy Matt, president of Spirit of Springfield, the nonprofit that organizes the event called “Star Spangled Springfield.”

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
