Lake Mansfield has reopened in Great Barrington, Massachusetts after a dangerous E. coli test result was discovered to have been an error.

As town health agent Rebecca Jurczyk told WAMC Tuesday, the lake was closed to double check what produced the high rates of the E. coli bacteria.

“A lot of things can happen," she explained. "It could just be the heat, it could be waterfowl being in the water, or it could just be an error in the lab tests.”

Ultimately, it proved to be an error, according to the town.

With follow-up testing showing normal levels, Lake Mansfield is again open to the public.

Josh Landes has been WAMC's Berkshire Bureau Chief since February 2018, following stints at WBGO Newark and WFMU East Orange. A passionate advocate for Western Massachusetts, Landes was raised in Pittsfield and attended Hampshire College in Amherst, receiving his bachelor's in Ethnomusicology and Radio Production. His free time is spent with his cat Harry, experimental electronic music, and exploring the woods.
