Cyberattack Hits Vermont And New York Hospital Networks

The St. Lawrence Health System, the University of Vermont Health Network and federal officials are investigating cyberattacks on hospitals in Vermont and New York.

Vermont Health Network spokesman Neal Goswami said Thursday that the six-hospital system expects that it will take some time to restore the outage and that some changes have been made to patient appointments.

In upstate New York, St. Lawrence Health System said it detected a cyberattack early Tuesday morning on three of its hospitals from a virus identified as a new variant of the ransomware Ryuk.

Officials say the virus was contained and no patient or employee data appears to have been accessed.

The incidents occurred as federal agencies warn that cybercriminals are unleashing a major ransomware assault against the U.S. health care system.
