The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department is holding two public informational meetings on the eastern coyote to help people understand and learn to live with the animal.
The meetings, led by two experts, are planned for Oct. 22 at the Weathersfield Conservation Commission in Weathersfield and Tuesday Dec. 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Barre Fish and Game Club.
State wildlife director Mark Scott says eastern coyotes first appeared in Vermont in the 1940s after breeding with eastern wolves in Canada. The department says they are now well established here and in other northeastern states.
Scott says they are larger than western coyotes and are "adaptable opportunists," living in remote wild areas and areas settled by humans.
