Big Y Building New Distribution Center For Retail Expansion

Big Y Foods has started construction on a new $46 million distribution center next to its corporate headquarters in Springfield, Massachusetts.

The new facility will be roughly the size of ten football fields -- more than twice as large as Big Y’s current distribution center.

It will support the retailer’s expansion plans for the next 20 years, according to Big Y President and CEO Charles D’Amour.

"This will make us that much more efficient and we think we can accomodate another 20 or 30 so supermarkets," said D'Amour.

State-of-the-art refrigeration systems in the new building will have room for more fresh foods from local farms and other suppliers.

Big Y got a $4.6 million tax break from the city in exchange for a pledge to create 32 new full-time jobs.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
