Hampshire College has announced its new president after a tumultuous year.

The struggling Amherst, Massachusetts liberal arts college says its eighth president, Edward Wingenbach, Ph.D., will lead the school. He has spent the last six months as acting president of Ripon College in Wisconsin, where he previously served as vice president and dean of faculty and a professor of politics and government. Before that, he was an administrator and faculty leader at the University of Redlands in California.

Saying he believes in the college, Wingenbach said in a statement that he plans to reinvigorate the campus’s legacy of innovation.

Wingenbach replaces interim president Kenneth Rosenthal, who took over when president Miriam “Mim” Nelson resigned in early April.

Josh Landes has been WAMC's Berkshire Bureau Chief since February 2018 after working at stations including WBGO Newark and WFMU East Orange. A passionate advocate for Berkshire County, Landes was raised in Pittsfield and attended Hampshire College in Amherst, receiving his bachelor's in Ethnomusicology and Radio Production. You can reach him at jlandes@wamc.org with questions, tips, and/or feedback.
