Federal prosecutors are filing charges against a woman whose attempted murder case was dropped by a Vermont county prosecutor because an insanity defense was planned.
Veronica Lewis was charged in the 2015 shooting of firearms instructor Darryl Montague at his Westford home. Federal officials say in an unrelated 2013 case a New York court found Lewis to be "mentally defective" and she was not allowed to possess firearms. She stole Montague's gun after she shot him.
The U.S. attorney for Vermont has charged Lewis with unlawfully possessing a gun.
Governor Phil Scott said he was informed of the U.S. Attorney’s decision. “I think this is good news.”.
A public defender has not yet been appointed.
