Death Of Man Days After Police Altercation Ruled Homicide

The office of Vermont's chief medical examiner has ruled the manner of death of a man found dead three days after he was hit in the head by a Burlington police officer was a homicide.
The death certificate says the cause of death of 54-year-old Douglas Kilburn, of Burlington, was "undetermined terminal mechanism" due to multiple underlying conditions, including hypertension, cardiac and cerebral vascular disease, obesity, diabetes and skull fractures due to blunt impact.

Burlington police say officers were called March 11 to the University of Vermont Medical Center, where Kilburn allegedly hit officer Cory Campbell in the face at the emergency department's parking lot. Campbell then punched Kilburn.

The police union says "the finding does not imply" Campbell did anything wrong.

State police continue to investigate.
