The third-largest city in Massachusetts has hired its first sustainability coordinator, a person to help it achieve energy efficiency goals.
Gerard Kiernan, the former operations manager at the Eastern States Exposition, started work a few weeks ago as the city of Springfield’s Facilities and Sustainability Engineer.
Climate activists had lobbied Springfield city officials for years to create such a position.
WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill spoke with Kiernan about his new job and his plans for reducing Springfield’s carbon footprint.
