The City Council in Springfield, Massachusetts Monday will consider final passage of an ordinance to ban single-use plastic shopping bags.
Since the ordinance was given initial approval earlier this month, some amendments have been added to address concerns raised by residents and business owners.
Mayor Domenic Sarno said he is unsure if he will sign the ordinance should it reach his desk.
" Whether it is the council or myself, we do not want to make it difficult on any individual or business," said Sarno, who added he had not seen the final version of the proposed ordinance.
" So, we'll see," Sarno said Friday when asked if he would sign a plastic bag ban.
If approved, the ordinance would take effect in 12 months at most retailers, with stores less than 10,000 square-feet getting an additional six months to comply.
