St. Patrick's Day Traditions O'Plenty This Weekend

WAMC

Irish heritage is being celebrated this weekend.  In western Massachusetts, the Holyoke St. Patrick’s Parade that steps off at noon Sunday attracts hundreds of thousands of spectators.

Springfield Parade Marshall Monsignor David Joyce, a long time priest in the Springfield Diocese, will lead the Springfield contingent in Holyoke.

"It is really a great honor to be asked, an unexpected honor," said Joyce. "There are those who have done all the work and I get some of the credit."

On Friday, Mayor Domenic Sarno issued a proclamation recognizing the contributions made to Springfield by the Irish community.

The Irish Flag was raised outside City Hall.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
