The Montpelier City Council has approved a pilot program to allow a California-based company to deliver 100 electric scooters to the city.
Bird Rides, Inc. will place scooters at various points throughout the city. The scooters, activated through a smartphone app, cost $1 to activate and 15 cents per minute of use.
The Times Argus reports the scooters hold their charge for about 20 hours, and contractors hired through the company will collect them and recharge them overnight. Users must be 18 or older, and the company provides free helmets.
Councilor Conor Casey says the scooters can help reduce traffic and push the city toward its goal of reducing fossil fuel use.
