The City Council in Montpelier, Vermont, says it has an emergency action plan to identify and combat the invasive emerald ash borer recently detected in the capital city.
The council says it received an estimate of $750,000 to manage the spread of the invasive emerald ash borer over the next 10 years. The Times Argus reports Montpelier has become the latest victim of the invasive insect species, which has spread to 35 states and killed millions of trees.

Tree Board Chairman John Snell says a management plan is necessary with the recent arrival of the insect.

Snell stressed that the council should view the cost as an "investment" in the future health and safety of city trees.
